Many people spend Christmas time with a fluffy nose, and it’s not because of the cold weather but an allergic reaction to all the plants. People all over the world have different kinds of allergies. And among them are people who are allergic to different kinds of plants.
Christmas is the one holiday where all households include plants in their decor. These plants include Christmas trees, decorative fir, and pine cones, and poinsettia. Let’s take a closer look at these plants:
Christmas Trees
Christmas trees are the biggest reason for allergies in people during Christmas time. This is the most common decoration, and all most all households bring in a Christmas tree regardless of the size. Not only are the trees brought in, but they are also decorated. These Christmas trees are adorned with all sorts of decorations such as ornaments, stars, and figurines. When decorating the tree, people have to be in close proximity, and that is when they catch on to these allergies.
Mold on Christmas trees can be why many people spend their days sneezing. Sellers cut these trees several days ahead and stored in places where they can easily catch mold. Furthermore, when you bring these trees into your home, you only give the mold a more comfortable environment to grow. This is why when you buy a Christmas tree, you must check for mold. If the tree has mold, either get it cleaned or look for a new tree entirely.
Dried Plants
People might have several allergies from different plants and not even know about them. Dried plants are a feature of Christmas and are used in decorations. Before you bring in any such decoration, you must first make sure that you are not allergic to them. It is best to test first rather than pay for the consequences.
Poinsettia
This is a very commonly used plant in Christmas decorations. They actually originate from the rubber trees and have the same compounds found in Latex. If you are allergic to latex you will surely be allergic to Poinsettia. It is best that you avoid using this plant in your decorations. Don’t even bring in wreaths and garlands that have some Poinsettia in them.
Dusty Artificial Wreaths and Garlands
Several people use artificial wreaths and garlands, but what most people do is use them without dusting them off first. Over time these wreaths and garlands can collect dust which is why, when reused can cause allergies. Before you put them away for the year, you must cover them up properly so that they don’t gather dust and you do not have to spend your days sneezing when trying to put up the decorations.
Other than that, artificial wreaths and garlands are not allergens as they are mostly made out of plastic. They do not have any smell and are not eaten in any way. So, if you are worried about allergies, you can easily use them.
